E-COMMERCE – Why do we need it?

Surveys carried out by the Canadian Government and marketing consultants with a keen interest in the private sector e-economy shows that; all facets of the Internet economy, e-commerce, applications, and infrastructure providers, are growing exponentially and are expected to continue to do so in the near-to-medium term, regardless of variations in definition. It is estimated that revenues from the Internet economy will have growth rates well over 50 per cent a year for the next several years.

Surveys Carried out by Statistics Canada showed the following results:

    • Internet sales account for 54% of Canada’s trade
    • By 2002, 71% of businesses had web access
    • 35% of businesses have their own sites
    • 33% of businesses with websites accommodate for e-commerce
    • In Ontario, 54% of business sales revenue is generated from internet sales
    • In 00, only 53% had web access, 10% of them had websites, and only 10% of them employed e-commerce functionality (0.6% of Canada’s businesses).

The figures show, that despite a low number of e-commerce sites, accommodating only 8% of Canada’s businesses, 54% of Ontario’s trade is done through these sites. Also from these results, we can tell that the number of Canada’s internet trading companies has grown by over 7% in 2 years.
